OpenAI officially announced on February 9, 2026, that it is beginning to test advertisements inside ChatGPT, marking a significant shift in how the company plans to monetize its popular AI assistant. The initial rollout applies only to users on the Free and Go subscription tiers in the United States.

Why Ads Are Coming to ChatGPT

ChatGPT is used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide for everything from learning and research to work and everyday problem‑solving. Maintaining this scale with fast, reliable performance requires massive infrastructure investments, including data centers, servers, and ongoing development. Subscription revenue alone hasn’t fully offset these costs, and ads are one strategy OpenAI is testing to support broader, free access without charging everyone.

According to OpenAI, ads should help fund the ongoing improvement of ChatGPT’s intelligence and capabilities while preserving a high‑quality user experience. Users on higher‑tier paid plans like Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education won’t see ads at all.

How the Ads Work

OpenAI has designed the ad experience with several key principles in mind:

  • Ads Do Not Influence Answers: Ads are run on a separate system and do not change what ChatGPT says. The AI’s responses remain independent and focused on what’s most helpful to the user.
  • Clearly Labeled and Separate: When ads do appear, they are clearly marked as “sponsored” and visually separated from the chatbot’s response to avoid confusion.
  • Relevance Based on Context: In the test, OpenAI matches ads to the subject of the conversation, past chat topics, and past ad interactions in order to make them more useful and contextual. For example, someone asking about recipes might see an ad for meal kits.
  • Privacy Protections: Advertisers will not have access to the content of users’ conversations, chat history, personal details, or private identifiers. Only aggregated ad performance metrics (like views and clicks) are shared with advertisers.

OpenAI also gives users control over their ad experience: you can opt out of ad personalization, dismiss specific ads, delete ad‑related data, or upgrade to a paid plan to remove ads entirely.

User Control and Transparency

One of OpenAI’s priorities is letting users manage their experience. Controls include:

  • Turning off ad personalization so only generic ads are shown.
  • Viewing and clearing your ad history with a single tap.
  • Understanding why a particular ad was shown.

These features aim to preserve user trust and ensure ads feel helpful rather than intrusive.

What’s Next

OpenAI emphasizes that this is a learning phase. Feedback from this test will guide how ads evolve within ChatGPT, including potential expansion beyond the U.S. and new ad formats. The company aims to balance supporting wider access to powerful AI tools with upholding privacy, trust, and the quality of the ChatGPT experience.
